چکیده

This paper explores whether bioprospecting can reasonably be expected to change rural incentives to conserve tropical ecosystems. Bioprospecting advocates posit that the prospect of discovery of biota of immense commercial worth offers an avenue to increase the valuation of nature and endogenously reduce consumptive use of habitat. We consider the microeconomic mechanisms by which bioprospecting might affect incentives and the distributional consequences

Identifying the Contribution of Indigenous Knowledge in Bioprospecting for Effective Conservation Strategy

This paper attempts to examine the contribution of indigenous and traditional knowledge in the process of bioprospecting, and analyzes how such knowledge influences the benefits of bioprospecting. Empirical evidence suggests that (i) out of the two widely debated but dissenting hypotheses on the benefits of bioprospecting, one estimating higher values is supported and (ii) if the bioprospecting...

Bioprospecting Potential of the Soil Metagenome: Novel Enzymes and Bioactivities

The microbial diversity in soil ecosystems is higher than in any other microbial ecosystem. The majority of soil microorganisms has not been characterized, because the dominant members have not been readily culturable on standard cultivation media; therefore, the soil ecosystem is a great reservoir for the discovery of novel microbial enzymes and bioactivities. The soil metagenome, the collecti...

Marine spatial planning (MSP): a first step to ecosystem-based management (EBM) in the Wider Caribbean.

The rapid decline of coastal ecosystems of the Wider Caribbean is entering its fifth decade. Some of the best science documenting this decline and its causes has been done by the laboratories of the Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean (AMLC). Alarmed at the trends, Caribbean conservation pioneers established marine protected areas (MPAs) which spread throughout the region. Unfor...

Ethnobotanical Importance of Orans - As a Means Of Conserving Biodiversity

Special sites or areas that have one or more attributes which distinguish them as somehow extraordinary, usually in a religious or spiritual sense, are called sacred places. They tend to evoke a feeling of some awesome, mysterious, and transcendent power that merits special reverence and treatment. Sacred groves are stands of trees or patches of forest that local communities conserve primarily ...

THE DEEP HUMAN PREHISTORY OF GLOBAL TROPICAL FORESTS AND ITS RELEVANCE FOR MODERN CONSERVATION To appear in Nature Plants 3 (2017)

Abstract: Significant human impacts on tropical forests have been considered the preserve of recent societies, linked to large-scale deforestation, extensive and intensive agriculture, resource mining, livestock grazing and urban settlement. Cumulative archaeological evidence now demonstrates, however, that Homo sapiens has actively manipulated tropical forest ecologies for at least 45,000 year...
